The Department of the Environmental Science of the University of Cape Coast welcomes all new and continuing students to its stimulating undergraduate and graduate programmes in Environmental Science and Botany. The Department has a longstanding and privileged tradition of academic excellence and research scholarship developed over the 12 years of its existence. Currently, the Department offers internationally recognized programmes that attract students, lecturers and researchers from across the West African region and the world.

We, in the Department, are continuously striving to churn out distinguishing graduates by providing students with a high-quality and cross-cultural learning experience. Towards this goal, and in tandem with the University’s quality assurance practices, our programmes are regularly reviewed by teams of professionals from other institutions regionally and internationally and always meet or surpass the demanding accreditation standards of recognised international accreditation bodies. My colleagues and I stay at the cutting edge of research and innovation in order to expose our students to the very best ideas and techniques.

Students in turn are expected to display diligence, discipline and dedication in this teaching and learning exercise by, among other things, attending all classes, completing all assignments and engaging in adequate self-study. Also, in order to perform at optimum levels students should eat healthy meals, exercise regularly and get adequate rest. Finally, I encourage you to work closely with your lecturers who are all knowledgeable in their fields and are eager to assist and motivate you to high levels of achievement and success.


The Department was established in 2002 as a result of restructuring of the now defunct Departments of Zoology and Botany. The courses of the Department undergo constant review to make them more relevant to national developmental and international needs. Ours is student friendly Department where educational, emotional and social problems of students are catered for through effective guidance and counselling, and referrals where professional engagement is deemed fit.The Department is to endow students with sufficient knowledge in environmental issues, basic ability to think logically and the skills to utilize acquired knowledge to solve environmental problems in the various communities for their personal gains and the good of the society at large.

The competencies of faculty members have been developed to solve environmental problems related to water, soil, atmospheric pollution, biodiversity and conservation. Apart from teaching, faculty members in the Department continues to engage themselves in active research and renders extension services to community.The Department regularly reviews its syllabus and introduces new programmes to meet the demand needs of the nation as well as international needs. It also encourages its faculty members and staff to develop themselves to play their roles effectively and for self advancement of their careers.

The Department also renders outreach programs through its facilities, i.e., Herbarium Unit and Botanical Garden to various categories of interest groups. These include Senior Members in the fields of applied biology and applied chemistry and students of first and second cycle institutions. Various religious and social groups also patronize the Botanical Garden.

The natural world is complex and anthropogenic activity culminate in unforeseen consequences that are sometimes irreversible. The study of how physical and biological processes maintain life, and how humans affect nature, requires a broad interdisciplinary perspective. Environmental problems and their associated solutions typically involve ecological, social, political and economic aspects which the scientist must be aware of.This is why the study of environmental science is a clear and present imperative. It is only by understanding how the world works that we can begin to address some of our pressing global environmental challenges.
